Majestic and Fuzzy

I had noticed that part of the garden where I’d just tossed some seeds looked stirred up. And there was one tomato plant that looked like the top was snipped off.

But I didn’t think much of it until I saw these clips.

I went back out there and looked more closely.

Those deer have been enjoying quite the buffet, snacking on many of my garden offerings.

They’re so pretty, though.

The camera is set low to the ground so they look gigantic.

I have the camera strapped to a 5 gallon plastic bucket that is easy to move around. I did not expect deer when I put it in this location. I thought I’d get a better view of the raccoons or opossums.

I am still amazed by how much is going on out there in my not at all rural location.

Another Raccoon Story

I was at Mom’s a couple of weeks ago and she is having a raccoon problem.

She moved all the cat food and secured anything else a raccoon might get into.

Except these milks. We found this in the yard.

On the complete other side of the yard we found the straw.

I guess that’s why the raccoon had to chew it up.

By the way, the garage smelled like funky wild animal. Raccoons may be cute but they smell.

I had this brilliant idea that maybe we could scare it away with some bells or something on the door.

All I could find was some aluminum cans and I made a pyramid by the cat door.

Cans were knocked over when we got up!

But I set them up the next night and they were knocked over again plus one of the cans was carried outside. I guess the raccoon wasn’t scared.

Mom is reluctant to block the cat door because : what about the cat?

We are exploring some modern cat doors for a solution.

The Mouse Situation

Here’s what the Klamath looked like on May 21st. It was pretty muddy and moving fast.

I wrote earlier about finding signs of a mouse in the shop. I had a video, too, but I guess I posted that to Instagram.

I cleaned up everything that a mouse might like and packed it away and didn’t worry about it again.

For a long time there was no sign of a mouse.

Here’s a picture from October 2021 for comparison.

Until there was.

There was a dead one at the bottom of the stairs in the basement. I went down to tell Bob something and said: HEY! There’s a dead mouse here.

Oh, he said. I didn’t see it.

But then I kept finding mouse poop in the middle of my work table in the shop. At first I thought they were seeds or something. Why would a mouse keep pooping in the middle of the table?

I broke down and bought some traps. I hate to kill things but I don’t want mice frolicking around pooping wherever they want.

I set up the trap in the middle of the table thinking: what mouse would get caught in the middle of a table?

Next day …. And it had a surprised look on its face.

We caught 4 mice in 3 weeks. That seems like a lot. I think the bird feeders created a fun environment for them. Hopefully the word is out and they have moved back outside.

Roaring River

Salmon River, Blue Hole. May 21, 2023.

For years and years Blue Hole was our swimming hole on the Salmon. But at some point, because of changing water pattern or high water, the shade dwindled to almost nothing. We had to lean against some willows to catch a break from the sun.

I also felt like you went and had a nice swim in refreshingly cold water and then had to hike up the hot bank and crawl into a scorching hot car and that undid the whole point of going to the swimming hole. I can’t remember the last time I swam down there.

When I was in Orleans the Klamath was high and frothy (photos to come) and I asked Mom if she wanted to take a little drive and see what the Salmon looked like.

Too bad I don’t have any good Blue Hole non-spring photos handy. I think I have them non-digitally in a box somewhere.

During swim season it is slow-moving, bright-blue water.

Look at this wide, muddy froth.

Remember Back in February When We Had Snow?

These are photos from months ago when it snowed.

I can’t even remember the exact sequence of events. I think it snowed and then a day later we had an ice storm.

Or maybe I’m confused from December.

It’s pretty. The steps are from me running out to feed the birds.

I think this was one of the neighbor cats, probably Noah, sneaking through hoping to find a spot without snow.

Welcome Robots!

I had a whole robot themed post planned. Originally there were 3 robots but I can’t remember the third one.

These are robots that deliver food at Oregon State. They are really cute. I loved how they waited to cross the street.

This is Jarvis the barista who make drinks at Muji in downtown Portland. I tried to make a video of it for my robot themed post but I pressed all the wrong buttons because I am an old and technology is hard. I did not get a successful video of him making me my drink.

Clearly, I am not ready for the robots. Or maybe I need them more than ever.

Baby Tanq

When Dad was in the hospital he kept asking for a drink.

We got the idea to bring him some mock gin and tonics. Even the nurses were in on it and if we couldn’t be there, we would leave the can and they would bring a cup of ice and make him his drink.

He eventually complained about the fake drink and asked for a real one.

We resisted for awhile but when he was feeling better we brought him real (weak!) gin and tonics — mostly tonic and a wedge of lime. Every afternoon I would show up at skilled nursing with a mini-cooler so I could give him his happy hour drink.

When we were sick and couldn’t get over there he called me once and asked if this was a dry county because no one would bring him a drink.

We knew all the reasons it wasn’t the best idea because he was taking medications and so forth. But also he’s 92, he wanted a drink, and it made him really happy.

This was the little container we re-used to make the drinks.

Heartbeat Braves is an Audiobook!!

Pen name was given the opportunity to turn Heartbeat Braves into an audiobook using digital narration.

I understand all the concerns about using digital narrators. I would LOVE to record my books with Indigenous voices but I don’t have the skills or resources to make that happen.

I wrung my hands and thought about it for quite some time but decided to give it a shot.

I keep reading the instructions and I guess it’s only available via the Apple Books app:

Heartbeat Braves.

I am listening to it right now. Madison does a good job but here are a few funny mispronunciations like when Linda tells them to polish their resumes and she says Polish, like of the country Poland. I also hear some typos and awkward sentences.

But I think it came out great. I hope people who prefer to consume their romance via audiobooks will give it a try.

Ice Delight

This was back in December on Christmas Eve when we had the ice storm.

I was worried about my apple and fig trees but everything did fine.

According to my dashboard I have over 3000 posts and in my dreams I would like to go through them and clean up some weird formatting that’s happened over the years. Maybe fix some titles and dead links. Maybe just delete stuff.

Not a priority. I’d like to clean out the garage, too. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed. haha.

Do Not Freeze Whole Pumpkin

I left the pumpkins on the deck until I had a chance to deal with them only November was chaotic and all the weekends filled up and then we had the Dad-tastrophe right after Thanksgiving and I forgot about them.

Then it froze.

They did not like that.

When I had a chance I chopped them up and threw them in the garden so the critters could have a snack.
