Holidaze

Crazy snow in Happy Camp.

Stinkface from cat because I would not provide a lap for him to sit on.

Gorgeous day on the Klamath River.

Here they are! The Rentz ladies. My sister is crouching a little bit so she doesn’t look taller than me.

Siskiyou pass on the way home. A little iffy but not too bad.

Turkey Day Is Here

In honor of Thanksgiving. Lefty was my great-uncle, my grandfather’s younger brother. I’d like to point out that none of the get-up in that photo is traditional to our tribe. I think Aunt Genie was a Montana Indian so we can cut them a little slack.

Meanwhile, I drank the Kool Aid! I’m spatchcocking.

I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Goofy Face

It’s been awhile since I did a sister goofy face photo.

This photo has so much awesome stuff going on it in it, I can hardly stand it.

Both my and my sister’s faces. My socks and no shoes. The woodpile. My cousin Kathy in my Mom’s lap. My Mom’s Carol Brady hair. Norska, the dog. The antenna on the lawn.

I talked to my sister this morning and I forgot to warn her that the “Twelve Days of Christmas with the Rentz Girls”™ is happening next month.

I think I’m going to start with the youngest. And on Xmas Day I’ll get a photo of us in our awesomely mature advanced state. Stay tuned!

The River at the Center of the World

Klamath River, February 2012

Did I mention I was sneaking off to California for an extra long weekend to hang out with my family?

It was brilliant. Every bit of it was great except for the long drive home. And even that wasn’t so bad because the weather was decent.

No time for more comprehensive update until this weekend.

Vacation Had to Get Away

I’m home.

I had a fabulous trip. Everything about it was perfect except for the last 25 miles of the drive home. There were two car accidents plus tons of road work and it took over an hour. Even the exit to my house was all orange cones for re-paving.

But before that there was awesome company, perfect weather, great swimming, tons of good food, delicious adult beverages, my favorite hike and probably lots I’m forgetting. I wished I had one more day but I was glad I was leaving while I was still having a great time.

I was so busy having fun I didn’t even finish one book.

Now I’m here. I harvested 5 tomatoes. I got green beans, cucumbers and squash from Mom. I’ve got the closest thing to suntan I’ve had in years. (The glare is off.)

And I’ve got a long weekend to enjoy before vacation is really over.

I have tons of email to go through. I probably owe you.

Also I have about 400 photos from this trip plus I’m way behind on Timbers photos. (I’m sure you’ve been concerned.)

Possibly more catch up later or I’ll sit on my butt tomorrow and enjoy goofing off. I’ll see how I feel when I wake up.

Hitting the Road

When we were in Grants Pass last month we went to this giant kitchen store. The kind of place you could wander around in for hours (if you’re a kitchen store type of person like me and a huge part of my extended family) and find tons of things you want. The kind of place you can’t leave unless you buy something.

I bought this strawberry corer because we didn’t have hours that day so I didn’t have enough time to do more damage.

It took these photos because of the instructions which if you can’t read say: Insert teeth of corer at stem and twist out.

Just in case you weren’t sure how it worked.

I am hitting the road tomorrow for California. The plan is to hang out with family, drink adult beverages, eat yummy food and do some swimming in the river.

I will offline until next week. Don’t do anything crazy while I’m gone.

GLUTTON-O-MANIA

It rained all day Christmas, but we went for a walk the next day. Eye-Ees Road.

We’re back.

It was a great holiday with lots of fun and laughs and great people and fabulous food. I give it 10 stars.

It took me only 5 days to train myself to think that five minutes after I got up in the morning, I needed to start eating cookies or candies and there was no reason to stop until going to bed at night.

Yesterday I got up and announced that I never wanted to eat or drink anything ever again. We were driving home and by 10am I had the bag of Christmas cookies open on my lap.

I’ve got the rest of my life to detox. No sense in rushing into anything.

Careful instructions for feeding your dog this type of treat.

Yesterday was the second time this year Bob and I drove home from California on a Tuesday. As soon as we’re close enough we tune into the local classic rock station to listen to two-fers.

We invented a game where we try to predict the next band. And once we know the band we try to guess the next song. Hey, on a nine hour car ride, this is a fun game.

During the summer they did a two-fer AC/DC. I can’t remember the songs but during the second one Bob said: Does AC/DC always sound like this? I said: You mean two loud chords and a guy screaming? Bob nodded. I said: YES. That’s why they’re awesome.

Yesterday we heard: The Cars, The Beatles, Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Led Zepplin, Guns N’ Roses, Joan Jett

Guesses that never materialized: Fleetwood Mac, Foghat, AC/DC, Tom Petty, Black Oak Arkansas, Journey

Auntie wrangling the crabs for the crabfeed. “Sorry,” she said as she shut the pot lid down on some flailing crab legs.

Last night I had miserable insomnia. I woke up at 1am and read Julia Child letters for two hours before trying to go back to sleep. After another hour I went downstairs to wake Bob up and ask him to come back upstairs. We talked for awhile and then he fell asleep. I guess I fell back to sleep around 5am.

The Julia book of letters is really good.

Bob holding a baby! (Jacob) Someone asked him if the baby looked tired. “How the hell do I know what a tired baby looks like?”

That’s the update. This afternoon Bob and I are going to look for a lamp. We never do anything for our house so I feel like a public announcement is warranted. It’s going to be a good reading lamp for by the couch. I’m sure if we find one I’ll take photos. Don’t want you to be left out.

Mom’s Garden

Someday I’m going to actually write posts here again instead of posting a bunch of photos with breezy captions. I’m not really sure when that’s going to start so if you’re looking forward to it, no need to mark your calendar yet.

We were back in California last weekend for one more trip before summer winds down.

Figs = Food of the gods. If you’ve never had one outside of a newton, I highly recommend.

We had the family regular squash casserole plus another recipe that was basically a variation of this except with tomatoes, bell peppers and a white sauce. And grilled squash.

I don’t have a squash connection this year so I enjoyed every bit.

The view from Auntie and Uncle’s. That little building on the lower left is the school bus stop.

FIFA WORLD CUP GAME 62

Me and my Mentros (sp?). Josa and Fernando made a bunch of these as a fundraiser to take Fernando to Disneyland. I picked this one because it has a hat and magnifying glass. Ryan got Darth Vader. I didn’t know you could do special orders. Like the handy place I keep my camera when my dress has no pockets? Photo from July 4 party by Aileen Wilder.

FIFA WORLD CUP GAME 62

Germany v. Spain 0-1

Wah. My team lost today. They played pretty much doo-doo. During the first half they seemed to have minimal interest in trying to score. And Spain played great.

It’s going to be a fun final on Sunday with Netherlands and Spain. And I get to see Germany play one more time in the consolation game on Saturday.

Then soccer will be mostly finished (still have Timbers) and I can become a productive member of society again which I’m sure will please a number of people but particularly the one I live with.

Tonight I got home from work late and made myself do some exercise. All I did on vacation was eat, drink and sleep. I needed to move around a bit.

Then I did the first major yard watering of the season. While the side part watered I worked on the garden and pulled a ton of weeds, harvested 3 beets — I’m eating the greens for dinner — and 4 little potatoes. I’ll never go hungry again!

FIFA World Cup Games 33, 34, 35 and 36

View from 1000 SW Broadway, Portland

I somehow left my notes on today’s games at the office. Dang, because I’m sure I had some real nuggets in there. I’m loving all the soccer comment spam I’ve been getting. Like I really believe they find these articles interesting. How about this: did you hear Messi and Tevez want to reform Oasis? Maybe I can run my fingers through their hair with a little Wonderwall playing in the background.

(Oh, and resist the urge to tell me about Turdpress’s Whosit that will deal with spam, that’s not the point here.)

I did get manage to get home with this ad I tore out of the AAA magazine for “quality tools at ridiculously low prices.” Even if there were tools I needed I would never get around to figuring out how to use them but these coupons are so awesome — a reciprocating saw with rotating handle for $19.99 — I don’t even know what that is but how can I pass that up? I don’t think that’s proper sentence but I’d really like to watch the highlights show before I go to bed so we’re going to let it stand.

Plus I still need to do my words for the beg-a-thon and take care of some other household stuff.

Here’s another thighlights gallery this time featuring Portugal.

Also here’s an NPR story about Orleans and the Karuk Tribe: FCC Eyes Broadband For Indian Reservations

Many tribal communities around the United States are in remote, rural areas. Humboldt County, Calif., is home to several tribes — among them the Karuk.

In the small community of Orleans, Calif., the Karuk make up a quarter of the population of just under 1,000 people.

The tribe’s IT officer, Chris Kleeman, says they even have a hard time getting phone service. “We lose our regular telephones, including 911, hundreds of times each year,” Kleeman says. Last July alone, they lost phone service about 250 times, he says.

Bari Talley in the story is my cousin. <3
