First Test Recipe – Governor Tuna Casserole

Priscilla grew up in Port Townsend and this little cookbook was sitting at the top of the pile. Bob mentioned seeing the Governor’s wife’s tuna casserole recipe and I knew I had to make it.

I do not like tuna and have suggested to Bob that if he wants to eat it, he should to go outside.

But I’m going to make this for fun and education! I bought all the stuff. Notice it doesn’t say what size can of tuna. I decided to go all in and bought a big one.

I will try to document the process and post on Sunday but if I run out of time it might be later in the week.

Sam’s Special For Six

What’s not to love about this recipe? Super simple. US Forest Service notepad. Obviously well loved.

Here’s how I interpret the instructions:

Fry the onions first. Take onions up and put in hamburger; add 2 tablespoons of chili powder to the hamburger, mash in lard. Add 4 eggs beaten up; add 3/4 lb. of cheese, 1/2 cup tomato catsup. Add the onions, salt and pepper. Cook slowly until done.

After eating don’t breathe near an open flame for at least four hours!

Favorite Berry

We love blueberries in this house. Our favorite time of year is the first blueberries at the farmer’s market.

We freeze a bunch and eat them all winter long.

We planted 4 blueberries a year ago. They aren’t producing much yet but maybe next summer.

Who Doesn’t Love Frosting?

Mostly I’m including this because I love the recipe card.

I’ve come full circle on frosting.

As a kid I loved it. I remember my mom got birthday cakes with roses on them and if you were the birthday girl you for sure got a rose.

Then I went through a phase where frosting was gross. It depends on who made the cake.

Now I don’t mind a slab of frosting now and then.

The Ultimate Hughes Classic

There are a bunch of stroganoff recipes in Priscilla’s files. I have made stroganoff, but not this recipe, for my husband and can’t begin to describe the delighted look on his face when he comes through the door and sees that on the stove.

Priscilla’s Recipes

This recipe box is classic. There are even a few blank recipe cards inside.

Wok Cooking

I wish I had the time and inclination to do more research. All these recollections are off the top of my head.

There was a particular moment in time when wok cooking became popular. I remember my mom getting a wok and bringing home an assortment of different utensils.

It’s hard to remember now that ethnic cooking was once an exotic thing to try. The ingredients weren’t always easy to get or required clever substitutions.

We didn’t have this cookbook at our house.

My mom got really good at wok cooking.

To this day I’m timid with heat and I never managed better than a giant dish of soggy vegetables.

Pudding Sauce

I love this one because it’s simple and includes notes. I also love the classic cursive penmanship.

I don’t know how something made with so much butter and sugar couldn’t be good. You could pour it on anything.

When The Dahlias Are Gone, It’s Really Over

Even last weekend the yard was pretty but by Tuesday it was in ruin. It’s funny how instantly the dahlias go dead after a freeze.

I’m going to start with Priscilla cookbooks and recipes tomorrow.

I’m still overextended and no extra brain juice for recipes this weekend. I will attempt to make a couple next weekend.

Bob received a snail mail solicitation from a yacht sales company. I don’t know why they think Bob is a candidate for a yacht. We left it on the kitchen counter for a long time because it was so funny,

Today is the twenty year anniversary of me working with this guy. I have very few photos of both of us and the ones that I have he looks like he’s in front of a firing squad. He is an excellent attorney but a terrible photo subject.

I don’t have a retirement date yet so we’re saying, here’s to another 4-10 years.

One Thing Leads to Another

I’m always on Bob’s case about putting things on the list so I know what to buy when I’m at the store.

He likes to leave me vague items such as, “mustard that I like,” or “good snacks.”

This week he wrote “lots of different squashes.” We like squash but don’t eat tons of it so I wasn’t sure what he was after but I bought something called a buttercup, another called turban, and an acorn squash.

Turned out he meant summer squash.

I had to include a picture of this giant beet I got from Orleans. I roasted it but we’ve barely made a dent in it so far.

I’m feeling run down at the moment so I’m not making any grand plans for NaNo or NaBlo this year. I’m still making plans just not overachiever plans.

I am the recipient of oodles of my mother-in-law’s recipes so the plan is to post at least one of her recipes each day. I will try to cook a couple of them too, for expanded posts. Yesterday I had a chance to go through a number of them and there were an astonishing number of recipes for “ham loaf.” That is definitely something I’m going to have to try and write about.

I’m working on a writing project, too, but I don’t want to talk about it yet so I won’t be reporting on that.

My dad gave up driving and gave me his car. As part of the deal, I am paying my sister for half so she has extra money to go towards a car when she’s ready. I have been driving a 2001 Toyota Camry since 2002. My dad’s car is a 2015 RAV4. I really love my Camry and have no complaints but that RAV4 is fancy nice.

The car came with five (5!) books not including the one in the glove box. There are two separate titles with “quick start” in the title. I thought most people didn’t read books anymore much less 5! I already had to open the one in the glove box because I couldn’t get the car to stop beeping at me.

We also got a piece of furniture from Orleans which necessitated moving other furniture and cleaning out things that I wasn’t planning to clean out right at this moment. I’ve still got several piles of things I’m trying to figure out what to do with. I’ll post a photo of the furniture soon because it’s epic.

Also from last year at this time, remember how our condiment shelf has broken more than once? Well, it broke AGAIN! Screw you Sears and your flimsy condiment shelves. It’s all duct tape from now on.
