2007 Picks: Read, Watch

My entire 2007 reading list can be found here.

Because I remain an overachiever, my ideal is to read 50 books a year. Why 50? I have no idea. It seems manageable, yet a person has to put some effort into achieving that. I haven't made it the past 2 years. This year was derailed by failed attempts to read Fortress of Solitudeby Jonathan Lethem and Snow by Orhan Pamuk, (Nobel Prize Winner). They were both Arts & Lectures visitors and I thought I should be more enthusiastic about their books even though I would avoid going into the bedroom during the day so I wouldn't have to see them on the nightstand, taunting me.

I also read The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova (snarl) a bloated, confusing, 642 page time-waster that offered the thin promise of something cool and vampire-y but bored me to unconsciousness and then ended in a quick page or two after the author ran out of historical tidbits about the Byzantine empire.

Some books I didn't hate were the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, something like 1600 pages of teenage vampires and werewolves in love and tragedy. Forget everything you know about vampires, teenagers, love and tragedy. I spent three consecutive weekends glued to the couch to finish these books.

Also loved Flight by Sherman Alexie, Bad Dirt by Annie Proulx, and two creepy-crawly books, The Ruins by Scott Smith and Cold Skin by Albert Sanchez Pinol.

Some great movies were The Simpsons Movie (of course), Once which is a fabulous musical-romance made in Ireland with incredible music. Few things interest me less than musicals but this is an amazing exception. Also loved Stardust (fairy tale with dreamy protagonist and off-the-hook plot developments), Half Nelson (fantastic performance by Ryan Gosling), Children of Men (brilliant piece of film-making).

TV: Battlestar Galactica which starts its last season in January is my number one. My new favorites are Torchwood, a spin-off of Dr. Who. I'm currently DVD-ing Dr. Who (current series that started in 05). Nothing better (and more time consuming) than discovering a show you love that's already been on for 3 seasons and you need to play catch up. And I love Bones and my guilty pleasure show: Supernatural.

Hope your holidays are spectacular and I see you in 2008.

Love, Pamela
