In 2005 I did the 50 Book Challenge after I read about it on Neal Pollack's site and he linked to this site. I started to keep a list of what I'm reading online. I've been keeping lists of my books since 1994 but I can't imagine I'll ever get them all up here (and who cares?)
Beginning in 2008 I moved my book reading to a blog:
I used to have a list here of recommended books. But it was so old I deleted it. But then I felt like something was missing if I didn't talk a bit about my book reading.
I like to read a ton of different stuff but mostly fiction. I read a lot of short fiction and a lot of spec fiction. I always have about 50 books in the "to read" pile. I wish this wasn't so.
Here is a very short list of writers I'm a huge fan of: Sherman Alexie, Annie Proulx, Richard Russo, Molly Gloss, Margaret Atwood, Raymond Carver, Connie Willis, Cormac McCarthy, Amy Hempel, Nick Hornby.
I keep looking at my bookshelf to see if there's anything I'm missing. Probably a lot. I also like Richard Ford and Elmore Leonard.
I don't like to pick favorite things but if I had to pick my top three favorite short stories it would probably be: "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, "De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period" by J.D. Salinger and "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. And I pick those just because I consistently read them almost every year and love them just as much every time. I could name more.
My favorites books are the ones that I can't put down and can't stop talking about.
